Awww... this is beautiful! I really like glimpses of who Kestrel is when she's younger, and realizing that she's been so consistent as a character! :) Lovely story, and it goes very well with the illustration.

I always like seeing our elder Kestrel back in the days when she was a relative youngster, and part of sprawling family connections that it seems like she has all-but lost in the present. As others said, it's easy to forget that she is a part of this little family, too. It's sad that her getting to see Newt grow was so postponed, but it's also a lovely reminder that even though it took a long time, she WILL get to see it.

Thanks so much for writing this Megan. I know I gave you a hard time and I'm a bit sad we didn't manage to get in the second part (yet) but I think this can stand very well on it's own.
I like the glimpse at Newt's first family and how they handled him. It's also a good reminder that just before Newt was born Bramble had died. Together with the fact that he was Born ooR it must have had some impact on his parents. I like that you picked up that subtle detail.
I also like the easy and familiar feeling interaction between Kestrel and the worn out parents and how this shows us what a sweet person Kestrel was all along. She is so concerned for not only little Newt but also his poor parents.
What I also like is how she looks at the baby and regards his strength and future. Very pointing knowing that later she'll have her own cubs born ooR. I so hope one day I can return the favor and write the second part ;)

It's always cool to be reminded of the family relationships between the different characters. It's easy to forget that Kestral would be someone's niece and that she and Newt would be cousins.

I often felt when my son was young that it would be nice to have three parents, so everyone could take turns having some time off and getting some rest. Although I guess some things would be exhausting no matter how many people were around.

So many things here! First of all, the illustration ~ so captivating! I couldn't take my eyes off how you drew/painted/Photoshopped? little Newt! Enchanting!

The story ~ it was cute to see Turtle especially be the doting parent. It reminds me of Cloudfern with Newt now. I especially like how the tribe is dealing with what we might call a special needs child. Doting, curious, understanding, hoping...
