Reading the story to me it came to an abrupt end. Like Beetle, I was expecting a "punch-line" of sorts. What's Coyote going to do now?? It is cute, but a little sad, that Beetle herself knows that she can't ALWAYS trust her brother. That he is predictably unpredictable. Now... Will he actually finish the spear?? ;)

When I read these, I seriously realize I forgot what I'd written. I think the point of it was that Beetle knows what her brother can be like... and that Notch used cubsitting to his advantage (getting help w/ the cleanup), then planned something that would take a while in hopes that little Beetle would fall asleep. I'm sure she eventually got him to play with her/teach her... but I don't think he woke her when he was done.

I so like Laughter's cleverness here. She DOES know her brother... emphasised by the wise words her mother gave her about not trusting everything he says. But I wonder if Notch did not make a mistake he might regret by making her search for him the next couple of days. Hope, he knows a good hiding place. ;)

It's always nice to see Notch acting like such a good big-brother to little Beetle! Although he doesn't entirely put aside his crafty ways, he genuinely seems to love his little sister and want to be nice to her. It gives an interesting picture of what Notch might be like as a father someday.

Beetle/Laughter and Notch interacting is always a good reminder to me that they are siblings - I sometimes lose track of who is related to who if I've been away from story-reading here for a while and this jogged my memory. It's great to see that Starskimmer and Cloudfern trust Notch to take good care of Beetle - it goes to show the others don't think he's a complete layabout.

I have to admit, I am a bit confused by this story. It's cute to see Notch and little Beetle interact here, but I feel as if I missed the point somehow. I somehow was expecting some kind of pay-off for all the set up with Notch being a sly one but maybe that was the trick ;) He actually didn't and just wanted to be nice to his sister?
I liked it that he actually explained to her why games can be useful and it was nice to see Beetle was a very curious and investigative cub from the beginning on. :)
