Very interesting! Driftwood seems like a character who's going places - hopefully good places. But who knows, mysteries seem to run rampant among the trolls, with secrets upon secrets. Wonder what One-Leg would say if he knew an old troll was staring down an old pegleg of his XD

I really do like the many layers on display here -- how a seemingly unrelated incident amongst the elves can come to have repercussions in troll society, and how it emphasizes that they really do occupy the same world; how much collecting such artifacts means to the ever-paranoid trolls; but also how it relates to the inevitable "black market" idea, as of course those artifacts would have disproportionate and illicit value to many. Little do the elves know!

Oooh. It's fantastic to see how interwoven the societies are! I didn't think that, at first, there'd be many artefacts... but now that you've pointed it out, what a wonderful treasure trove. Very cool glimpse into the workings of rank here - the power of knowing the right people is really showcased here, especially since Driftwood gives up what could be huge financial gains to win it. Which is also an interesting comment on Driftwood's character and what he finds moral or not. Very interesting, I wonder what the scholars will do with it?

I LOVE seeing how ripples occur... How the Fierce Ones led to the circumstances where OL was almost caught by the others, and lost his peleg... And where it went. Also makes me wonder more about the rafts the elves send downriver... This is so fascinating!

My grin became wider and wider while reading through this. After almost every passage I though: "Oh, that is what it is about! How neat!" Enjoyed it enormously and can't wait to read your next story about the trolls. You give them life!

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I do like how the title could be read two ways here. I really do like how you can convey such a clear picture of the trolls and their society, how it works and how the different schools and houses work.
I also just like how you worked in some of the ongoing plot. It makes the world feel more connected. Love it!
Hehe also I really just went "OH!" and "AH!" while realizing what was going on.

Love the characters you've come up with here, Chris, as well as the intrigue behind what some trolls will do to move up in the ranks. I'm interested to know if someone's ever been caught with something 'secret' like Driftwood had, and what the consequences of that would be!
