This was so well-written. I appreciated the look at Otter and Newt's strained friendship, and I LOVED Newt here, especially. I love that he didn't capitulate to his friend out of consideration for Otter's feelings. Newt is so much more mature (IMO), and it shows here. I like that he impacts Otter in a way that helps Otter past the initial hurt.

Throughout this whole story arc, I've really felt for these two, and especially for Newt. I have to admit that I feel a bit of impatience with Otter. It's not that I, too, haven't been there -- very young, and trying to work through feelings of love and desire for the first time. I'm not saying it's not hard! I'm also not saying that it's ever easy to hear "you're young and you don't know what love really is yet". But, I guess the truth that hits me is that Otter is more in love with an idea, than he's really in love with Newt. And maybe if he hadn't pushed for something so serious so quickly, it wouldn't have been quite as painful for both.

(An interesting though -- we always look at Honey as the character who had the most unrealistic romantic notions, and we pin some of the problems between her and Greenweave on that; and we look at Dreamflight, who went into a tailspin based on her own disappointed ideals, as inheriting some of Honey's flaws. But in this storyline, Otter reminds me a good bit of both Honey and Dreamflight… and while he isn't related to Honey, he IS Dreamflight's half-brother, after all. It makes me wonder what of this outlook he might have inherited from Greenweave. He sure didn't get it from Starskimmer!)

I can sympathize with both Otter and Newt here. It's not like Otter can turn off his feelings for Newt, but neither can Newt change his feelings for Otter. The last line broke my heart.

You're quite the master of emotions! I read the title and was expecting something rather different. I didn't think I'd be thrown into quite that deep a situation - your words really pull the reader into feeling the exact same anxiety and dread and all that stress that Otter does. And oh, Newt...! He's so mature for his age. For all the experiences I've had with "the talk" no one, no one at that age would have the wisdom and maturity and determination to actually get out the reasons behind everything - and yet it feels so flawlessly, perfectly Newt. Painful and raw and honest and beautiful all together. I want to say you are terrible for giving us that ending; that fleeting hope that maybe that would be all it took for things to be ok - but your choice to end it ambiguously is just perfect, and so lifelike. Sigh.

Oh, Mel, the beginning of this story catapulted me back to my own teenage years. Gosh, such awkward moments!
I really liked the turn of things, though. I finally understood Newts feelings, why he needs a brother. It makes so much sense to me, now.

I am glad to see more about their working their way through this awkward, painful situation, and am so very glad it won't undermine their friendship.

Adolescence is such a hard time ... I really liked how the two worked through the awkwardness and that they were so honest with each other. Poor lads, it's a hard situation when you don't want to hurt the other but your interests just run cross-wise.
I know the end gave you some troubles but it turned out well, I think - it definitely makes you want to know where they go from here!

Ah--adolescence...Hopefully Otter and Newt can wade through it. I really like the emotions that ran through this story. Very realistic and moving. I think their friendship will continue to blossom if they can be this honest with each other and are willing to put the concern for each other ahead of self. Poor little punkins....

You have a good feel for the relationship between the two young elves. One can not but wonder what the future between them will bring. I think Otter is just lonely and wants someone to be with. Nwet is one of the elves cloesesed to his age. I am happy they can come to trems becaus Nwet did not was a fru-mate he wanted a brother. that is so sweet

Oh my goodness...I really enjoyed reading this one. You did a great job of making Newt and Otter's emotions in this situation realistic. I got the sense that this was one of the hardest things Newt has ever had to say, and in the same vein, one of the hardest things Otter has ever had to hear. And I teared up at the end T__T. I think the ending is a bit ambiguous as to what their relationship will be like after this, and I'll be interested to see where it goes.

Always feels strange to be your own first comment ^^'
Anyway. Thanks Mareike for helping me with this one by pointing out some flaws. :) You're always my first and most important Beta :D

I hope you enjoy the story and I hope it didn't go over to easy ;)
