I always think of Snowfall as so calm and matronly. It's wild to see her as a stubborn and temperamental cub! I like how a usually UN-maternal elder takes her under her wing and gives her what she needs!

This was really interesting to see more of Stormdancer, and her interactions with cubs. I love her lack of patience, and Snowdrops stubbornness. That was a great idea Stormdancer had, I love the way she instructed the cub.

Being reminded that the current Elders also where cubs once is great - and such a sweet story! Loved the interaction and dialouge between Snowdrop/fall and Stormdancer and the descriptions of the flight were beautiful.

Thank you so much for this, Whit! I really love seeing more of Snowfall as a child, and especially as a mopey, childish one, for all her trying to be mature - nice to know she had those moments, too :p. I especially liked how Stormdancer reminded her that it would only get worse when her parents got back. The idea of big, strong Bearheart fussing about her is just too cute!

It's also great to see more of Stormdancer, and I can only agree that it's wonderful that she manages to be maternal without sacrificing her sharp personality. It was much more successful than sweetness with Snowdrop, anyway. Loved her pointed comments!

And then of course the "swimming". Such a breathtaking picture! I'm so envious of the elves, being able to experience that ... I'd love to see an illustration of it!

Aww, I thought this one was so sweet! And it's great to see Stormdancer like this. You know, because of her description she always seemed like an impatient character, but I love that this shows her softer, caring side as well. Lucky Snowdrop! :)

Stormdancer is such an interesting character! I love that she took the time to let Snowfall go "swimming." :)

Always cool to see more of Stormdancer! I love how you made her come off as maternal without making her overly kind and sacrificing the other aspects of her personality. You always have some great imagery in your stories, but this one really takes the cake!

Thanks for the kind comments! I've always wanted to work more with Stormdancer -- she's so very tart and sharp-edged, a real contrast to both of her surviving daughters Kestrel & Fadestar (I rather imagine her daughter Moon was most like her in personality). Inspiration confession: when I received this Random Pairing assignment, I immediately thought of that lovely scene from the film "Immortal Beloved", with a child-Beethoven swimming in a night-time lake, surrounded by the reflection of stars. So I stole the idea for this!

I really liked how this showed a kind of maternal side to Stormdancer that isn't typically thought of as "maternal". She's sharp and a bit impatient, but is still showing some great "comforting a child" skills, coming up with a pretty innovative solution. I also like the reminder that while Kestrel inherited her mother's gliding powers, she inherited her looks and temperment from her father Leather. It makes me want to see more of them as a family!

Beautiful imagery! So serene. And it's so sweet to see Snowdrop as a cub here. I love her trying to be all stoic and grown up and tough! Very fitting.

It's weird to see Snowfall as a kid and a mopey one. I like all the little things here. Like for example Snowdrop wanting to be like her father and the way elves to casts.
It's a wonder we didn't have more kiddos with broken bones in stories yet :P It happens so fast and even faster when kids are as active as elf kids has to be.

The story was cute and I really like Stormdancer. She's such a clever and sharp women. The "swimming" was a great idea and the images flooding my head were breathtakingly pretty :) I really like how you draw pictures with your words.

A lovely story! First, I was surprised because Stormdancer's character did not match with what I thought it would be. I thought she was more like Kestrel.
But I like getting suprised. The conversation between her and little Snowfall were hilarious... Stormdancer was so mean!
And wonderful description of the flight! The literally swimming in the stars was a lovely touch.
All in all it makes me want to read more about our ancestors!

Aww, that was very cute! :D I especially liked how Stormdancer was much more successful when she was "prickly" at Snowdrop than when she was solicitous. I also liked the detail of how when you go high enough, even on a hot night the sky cools down and makes a poor little girl cub less hot and sticky! :) I laughed out loud at a couple of Stormdancer's dry comments, too! Nicely done. :) I also have to say that I liked how unconcerned the tribe is with giving children alcohol to drink -- it's clearly a different set of scientific knowledge than I'm used to in my boring modern life! ;)
