"I was going to make a blanket for the cub."

That line got me right in the heart. It just screamed of crushed hope and grief. The idea of the patchwork blanket is a wonderful addition to Fadestar's backstory. I hope she gets to make one in the future.

I'm glad for this story, and the reminder that loss is felt throughout the tribe. Fadestar's grief is palpable, and Newt does a great job here of comforting her. He's such a sweetheart!

Newt does a lovely job here of figuring out just the right thing to do and say. It really is another kind of comfort for him to suggest a solution, instead of Fadestar having to make the decision by herself. I really like that the story depicts a different kind of comfort than what you might expect.

Mel, this is a wonderful and very touching little piece, and it's great to have Fadestar's take on it filled in. I absolutely love the idea of the blanket (I hope she will make two now for the cubs to come!), and the interaction between Newt and Fadestar is so natural and flowing. It's wonderful how his support gives her the possibility to grieve openly, and his optimism in the gesture of keeping the patch at the end is absolutely great!

Thanks for that sequel to this tragedy. It gives the whole incidence much more depth.
The patchwork blanket is such a lovely idea (too bad its only 9 months with us humans.. would be a very small blanket) and sad Fadestar nearly broke my heart. Such a wonderful ending with Newt taking over "the burden" and with this helping Fadestar to move on.

Thanks for writing this, Mel! I found it a really touching story and you portrayed how I wanted Fadestar to feel so well. She's indeed come a long way from the cub that withdrew herself from everyone.... and not in the least because of Newt. I love their friendship, and hopefully, that will continue to exist for centuries :)

I thought this was really sweet, and a much-needed view of Fadestar's reaction to this event. It's great to see the relationship between these two friends get stronger. I also really like the idea of Leather making something special for his daughters, and Fadestar continuing the tradition.

Thank you Whitney. :)
My inspiration here was that by all the stories written about this tragic event I really missed seeing Fadestar's reaction to it. From a few hints I gathered that she was looking forward to another cub blessing her family.

I had the idea a little longer but only now came around to finish it. ^^

Fadestar's quiet grief, and Newt's firm loyalty to his friend, are just both so nicely captured here! Their friendship is one of my favorite relationships in the Holt, and I look forward to seeing it explored further in the future. Fadestar's being unable to shake the vision of the blood-stained sleeping furs here is both devastating and deftly delivered.
