Poor Thornbow! Getting to look into his head during this time in the Holt was a real treat, though a heartwrenching one. Having him interact with Windsong and pointing out the irony of her situation, felt almost cathartic. Also interesting to bring up an elf's view on how and why Recognition occurs, as well as how unfair and random it can seem.

I think you hit the nail on the head here - showing us Thornbow's reaction to this Recognition reminds us just how much Thornbow HAS been affected - and I think it gives such thoughtful development to Thornbow's character!

Joanne, I'm so glad you tackled this! I think we have been kind of waiting to see this ever since the SD/QF Recognition so many years ago -- we knew it had to have affected Thornbow, but we never really saw how. I love the way this gives us a short but powerful look at the character and his personality; I really like the sharp edge to his reaction, rather than the idea (so easy to assume if we don't SEE it) that he was just sort of passively accepting. This makes his acceptance a bit more active a decision, and it's great to see the process that led to it.

Like Mel said, I really liked here that we got to see how a Recognition affects more than just the elves directly involved, i.e. the Recognized and their families.

Poor Thornbow, though - before this story, I hadn't been aware that his relationship with Quick Fang was more than sharing the furs, but he really seemed to have been quite smitten. And that she was "stolen" by the same guy as his last lovemate - ouch! That is adding insult to injury. It's kinda ironic that he's so worried about not having Recognized yet, considering Suddendusk was in the exact same spot before his first Recognition ...

I really liked that we got to see so many facets of Thornbow here - he's clearly hurt and lashes out against Windsong, but at the same time he tries to set that aside and be there for her, so that's something that's admirable. Very nice look into his character!

Oh poor Thornbow. You really pull at the heartstrings with that first scene of him in the still-warm den furs. He's just so adorable and smitten...and then.... oh the poor guy. Just want to hug him. I love the way that he can be both upset and angry and jealous and yet swallow all that to offer very sage and comforting advice to Windsong. Such a strong story for him, really shows off his character.

That's an interesting POV for the recognition. One I didn't think of but now it comes natural. Thornbow had no luck with Suddendusk. I bow my head before the many aspects of Thornbow's grudge toward Suddendusk here. Who he recognized, THAT he recognized twice while he didn't yet.
It also was a nice reminder on his former relationship with WIndsong. I can see how he'd be not the get to go person for her to talk about this, but in the end it did fit.
Very emotional look into Thornbow. I can tell I know him better now.
