"She was still a motherless cub, howling her claim". Yes! THIS! I absolutely adore this piece!! Foxtail, a chieftess but not yet ~ if Windburn was never chief, how different the family dynamics would have been! I love it!

Oh, WOW! This was perfect and was indeed very moving. So many turns of phrase that hit like bricks, like "the mother she had loved and resented". Her devotion to Cinder was so intense, and I could feel with her when she reacted the way she did to Honey. Glad that Blacksnake, at least, was sensitive to his granddaughter's feelings, even if it just hurt all the more. It also hit me the way Foxtail was thinking of the unfairness of being the one WITHOUT a parent's support, while the others had someone to fill that role for them.

I had wondered how Whispersilk's death would affect Foxtail, with their relationship being what it was. The description of Foxtail's grief, confusion and anger was detailed and flowed like water when I read the story.

I really liked this realistic view of how Foxtail felt after losing her mother, and the decision to be there for her brother even though she had previously not wanted anything to do with him. I was definitely a bit teary-eyed by the end!

This story had me deeply moved. You have such a talent to empathetically describe feelings without going over the edge.

The idea that Foxtail's feelings about her mother were mixed really lends this an air of welcome reality. It would have been too much to have Foxtail purely mourning Whispersilk, without that complexity of feeling. I'm really glad you tackled this important glimpse of what's going on inside Foxtail here.

I actually don't really know what to say. This was filled with emotion. I could feel the empty grief Foxtail must have felt after her mother was gone. This whole piece had this "numbed for every day things but just functioning" feel. If that makes any sense.
Liked to see deeper into the why and reasoning behind her being so possessive of her brother and how deep this event affected her.
Well written mood piece for Foxtail in this hard time.

Oh, Angie... I'm glad this story's up! Whispersilk's death was such a pivotal moment in her life. It will be interesting to see what comes of it - and of whether she and Cinder are as close later as she is to him here. Something that stands out here is how it feels that FT has almost dissociated herself from all that is happening, and from her feelings. I'm glad there's a moment of reuinion w/ those feelings,t hough, first in upset w/ Honey, and then in the howl at the end.

Angie, this was such a haunting piece that tells so much with so few words. I loved the heavy, almost unreal atmosphere, as unreal as I imagine Foxtail must have felt - grief makes things seem so disjointed, disconnected, and this piece embodies it perfectly, I think. Marvelous work!

This story mad me really sad, to see Foxtail's view of the things that were happening around her mixed with her feelings following her Mother's death. Not matter her mixed feelings toward her mother, she still cared that her mother died. :(
